Sunrise 2:30 a.m.
Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica
I photographed Antarctica a year after recovering from my near-fatal accident in the Arkansas wilderness. The captain estimated sunrise for 4am, but I was so excited by my location and the lack of true darkness that time of year, that I never truly slept like the rest of the cruise's passengers. I kept checking every half hour and caught this sunrise at 2:30 a.m.! In a few minutes these incredible colors were gone. The other photographer that awoke at 3:30 a.m. to catch the proposed sunrise was surprised to miss the great shot that only I got. The early bird catches the...sunrise!
